Kirby Apprentice Fund Training Scholarships

The Kirby Apprentice Fund is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary with the announcement of Training Scholarships to promote the use of natural refrigerants.

The Naturals Training Scholarships offered by Kirby will be available to 4th year apprentices registered in the Kirby Apprentice Fund who want to further their trade knowledge with an understanding of naturals refrigerants.

The scholarship will facilitate apprentices attending a 3-day Natural Refrigerants Training Experience consisting of ARC CO2 Green Scheme Accreditation and a day of practical systems exposure at the Sydney based, Beijer Ref Training Academy.

Beijer Ref brand and communications manager, Elizabeth Paparo says apprentices will benefit from a unique opportunity where they can combine classroom theory with safe and controlled, practical systems exposure.

“It is gratifying for Kirby as a business to be able to give back to our industry and support apprentices in this way. Beijer Ref is committed to advancing the growth of naturals technology, so this provides a means of educating technicians during their apprenticeship years.”

“As part of the Year 2 celebrations all registered Kirby Apprentice Fund apprentices will also receive some free CPS trade tools and additional tools support.”

The Kirby Apprentice Fund was established in 2019 as a way of supporting industry apprentices and strengthen the technical skills of the HVAC&R industry. Kirby raises funds through various programs and use those funds to provide trade tools and skills development opportunities.

Scholarship applications are now open and close 31 August 2021.

How long have you been with Kirby and what do you love most about your role with Kirby?

I have been at Kirby for just over eight years, including two blocks of Maternity leave. What I really love about my role is being able to interact with a wide variety of people who are passionate about the industry we work in. Also learning about the HVAC&R trade and challenging myself every day.

What does International Womens Day mean to you?

International women's day serves as a very important reminder to the world how far women have come, but also how far we have to go towards gender equity in the workplace.

How can this year's theme of "Choose to Challenge" be applied to our daily lives?

We should always uplift, support and encourage each other to speak up and be the best version of ourselves.

Why should other young women join the HVACR industry?

Not only will it bring more gender equity to the workplace, but it's also a great industry to work in with so many opportunities to learn and grow.

Anthea Walker – Customer Service Representative, Kirby Wingfield

How long have you been with Kirby and what do you love most about your role?

I started with F.C. Lovelock back in 1978, and have been through several changes in ownership. When I started we were a completely manual organization to an organization that is now Internet based. The refrigeration and air-conditioning industry has also gone through transitions with changes in refrigerant. I have had the opportunity to have roles in many different facets of the business which has enabled me to have a good grounding of how the business operates. I enjoy the daily interaction with customers and the opportunity to learn and develop.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day means recognizing the contribution of women in business and that we have something valuable to contribute.

How can this year's theme of "Choose to Challenge" be applied to our daily lives?

“Choose to Challenge” is a great theme, as we should always be looking at ways to challenge ourselves in both our work lives and private lives. This is the way we grow as a person and enrich our lives and those around us.

Why should other women join the HVACR industry?

The HVACR industry has been a predominantly a male dominated industry, but the women that have been coming through as technicians have enhanced the industry and with more women taking on the challenge can only improve the experience. The industry offers many opportunities.
